Basic Hemorrhage Control and First Aid Training for the Rwandan National Police

2024 Training Seed Grant

Location: Rwanda

Project Lead: Jordan Ozolin, MD, Emergency Medicine Resident Physician

Faculty Mentor: Kyle Denison Martin, DO, MPH, DTM&H

Additional collaborators: Emile Musoni and Innocent Nzeyimana

Traumatic injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Rwanda. The goal of this training is to reduce trauma-related morbidity and mortality by teaching basic skills in hemorrhage control and first aid. Content will be drawn from STOP THE BLEED, an educational course developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), as well as course material from a similar intervention provided to police in Nepal. The course will be taught to members of the Rwandan National Police (RNP), who are often first responders in disaster and mass casualty scenarios. Trainings will be organized by Dr. Emile Musoni, an Emergency Medicine physician and member of the RNP, and conducted by members of Healthy People Rwanda (HPR) and the Rwandan Emergency Care Association (RECA). An initial cohort of RNP members will be trained as trainers in STB and first aid so that they can provide subsequent trainings. Participants will be provided with pre-/post-surveys to assess knowledge and confidence. These surveys will be used primarily to improve the training intervention.
