
Roy Aaron
Biography
Roy Aaron is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is a graduate of SUNY Downstate Medical Center and did an internship in medicine at Montefiore Hospital, NY, a year of surgical residency at the US Public Health Service Hospital, NY, and the Harvard Combined Residency in Orthopedic Surgery followed by a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at the Brigham. He spent 5 years at the National Institutes of Health doing critical care and basic research. Dr. Aaron created the Center for Restorative and Regenerative Medicine at the Providence VA Hospital. Following an active surgical career in joint replacements and arthroscopy, Dr. Aaron has organized the department’s Osteoporosis and Bone Health Program. Throughout his career he has been actively involved in basic and clinical research focusing on skeletal circulation in osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis, and biophysical influences on skeletal repair. He maintains a departmental outcomes registry of 10,000 joint replacements as part of a national data base for surgical risk mitigation. Dr. Aaron serves as Research Director of The Miriam Hospital Total Joint Center and Director of the Orthopedic Program in clinical/translational research. He has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Arthritis Foundation.
Dr. Aaron is an Affiliate Faculty of Brown’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs, Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies. He is currently studying the personal and social effects of blast injuries and amputations from a policy perspective worldwide. He recently completed a course in Foundations of Bioethics at Yale. At Brown, he has served as Chair of the Medical Faculty Executive Committee and co-chairs the BIRCH Faculty Engagement Subcommittee. Dr. Aaron has served on many national panels, including 30 NIH and DoD study sections, and committees of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and Orthopedic Research Society. He has authored over 150 scientific and clinical papers and chapters, edited five books, and has moderated over 30 national and international clinical and scientific sessions.
