Call for Applicants: Visiting Scholar Program
The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies at the Watson School of International and Public Affairs at Brown University welcomes applications for the visiting scholars program. The program is open to academics on sabbatical as well as human rights practitioners who would benefit from a short-term affiliation with CHRHS while working on their own research and writing projects.
For Spring and Fall 2027, we are particularly interested in hosting researchers and practitioners who focus on asylum and immigration rights as well as environmental justice and rights, but scholars working in any human rights and humanitarian studies areas are welcome to apply.
Visiting Scholars will be expected to devote themselves to their own research. In addition, they will be welcome to participate in the intellectual life of the CHRHS community, including giving a public presentation or workshop focused on their work.
Please note that visiting scholar affiliation is a courtesy appointment that carries with it no salary, benefits, or other compensation. Visiting scholars typically have their own funding through their employer or home institution or through an external grant to cover their expenses. Limited shared office space may be available for visiting scholars, but this is not guaranteed.
The program is open to both US-based and international scholars and human rights practitioners. International scholars may need to obtain an exchange visitor visa (J-1) to enter the United States.
Visiting scholar appointments are possible for a minimum of one month. The maximum length of the appointment is one semester. Appointments are only available during the academic year (September 1 - May 30).
How to apply:
To apply, please submit the following materials via the Google Form:
- Cover letter indicating the preferred timing of the appointment, a short description and title of the proposed research project, and a brief explanation of the necessity of pursuing this project in person at Brown University;
- Research proposal (including how it fits with the Center’s thematic priorities) and your qualifications. Please limit to three pages.
- Curriculum vitae;
- Names and contact information for two references (no letters of reference required at this stage);
- A letter of endorsement from a regular faculty member at Brown, who would sponsor and supervise the visit if selected.

Applications for Spring 2027 visiting scholars are due November 1, 2026. Applications for Fall 2027 are due April 1, 2027.
