Dr. Stephanie Chow Garbern is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine with an appointment in the Division of Global Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She received Bachelor of Science degrees in Cultural Anthropology as well as Cellular & Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan. After completing medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY, she completed residency training in emergency medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. She then obtained her Master of Public Health degree in global health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA. Dr. Garbern has conducted research on the driving forces behind the rise in early and forced marriage among Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon, conducted a systematic review of health outcomes among humanitarian responders, and was part of a research team evaluating a disaster preparedness program in ethnic minority villages in China. She has also worked in Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, and Tanzania. Dr. Garbern has special interest in research in humanitarian settings, gender-based violence, and humanitarian technologies. Her current research includes performing a study on the use of novel wearable biosensor patches to improve monitoring and predict outcomes in septic patients in limited-resource settings.
