Biography

Dr. Emma Cortes is an emergency medicine and family medicine physician. She currently is a Global Emergency Medicine Fellow in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brown University, and a student in the Brown Master of Public Health Program. Her previous research was focused on intimate partner violence as well as healthcare for migrant communities. While completing her dual-residency program, she founded a nonprofit organization, The Migrant Healthcare Collaborative of South Jersey, which advocates for the health and wellness of migrant workers and their families within New Jersey. Dr. Cortes’ clinical work in emergency medicine has focused on indigenous communities on Native American reservations in South Dakota and Arizona. She serves as the chair of the Native American/Alaska Native Health Committee with the Global Emergency Medicine Academy within the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. She is interested in continuing to work in the fields of refugee and migrant healthcare, intimate partner violence and wants to expand her work to include humanitarian medicine.
